Abstract

ABSTRACT The deep cryogenic treatment process was used to develop the wear resistance of commercially available general purpose En 31 and En 8 steel. It was carried out at −196°C for 24 h. The dry sliding pin on disc wear tester was used to find the wear loss. Deep cryogenic treatment enhances the wear resistance of En31 steel by 60% when compared with conventionally heat-treated En31 steel samples. For En8 steel, the wear resistance improvement is 32% when compared with conventionally induction hardened En8 steel samples. Scanning Electron Microscopic analysis was done on worn surface of En31 steel samples. The fine carbide precipitation is responsible for the wear resistance improvement.
