Abstract
The traditional procedure for decorating cleaved NaCl crystals is found to be substantially affected by contaminants frequently found in high-vacuum systems. Transmission electron microscope photographs of Au decorant show effects caused by vapors from mechanical vacuum-pump oils, diffusion-pump oils, and other oils. No appreciable decoration of monatomic steps was observed in those cases where decoration was carried out in a sufficiently cleaned ion-pumped system.
