Abstract

One of the most likely reasons for women to stop breastfeeding in the early stages is because of discomfort and pain in the nipples and breasts. The primary cause of this pain is that the baby is not latching on properly and so it is a critical time for midwives to offer advice on the correct positions and techniques for feeding. Most pain is alleviated quickly once the baby is latching on properly. There are some products available to help ease the symptoms and pain associated with breastfeeding and engorgement such as gel packs, nipple cream and shields. Others, such as breast pads and shells, can help with milk leakage. While the success of these products varies from mother to mother the most crucial factor for ensuring feeding is comfortable is breastfeeding technique.
