Abstract

Summary Metaphysics has been raised from the grave by the recent logic and philosophy of possible worlds. Important contributions have been made by Saul Kripke, Alvin Plantinga and others. This reconstruction of metaphysics created new possibilities for the theory of properties, which is both an important part of metaphysics itself and central to the theory of divine properties. The traditional theory of properties in general and of accidents in particular suffers from considerable internal difficulties. A defective theory of relations, substances and attributes and the underlying assumption that all bearers of categorical properties are material, are prominent among them. So traditional metaphysics causes particular difficulties to the theory of divine properties. The main problem of this paper, then, is how to characterize the different kinds of divine properties in the light of the fundamental features of properties in general.
