Abstract
Abstract The parasitic red alga Dawsoniocolax bostrychiae (Joly et Yamaguishi-Tomita) Joly et Yamaguishi-Tomita (Choreocolacaceae, Gigartinales), previously known only from Brazil, was observed on Bostrychia radicans (Montagne) Montagne from Florence Bay, Magnetic Island, Queensland, Australia. This is the first record of a Bostrychia parasite in the Indo-Pacific. In culture, the carpospores of D. bostrychiae successfully infected a B. radicans isolate from Sao Paulo, Brazil and tetrasporophytes that developed in this culture released tetraspores that germinated and formed viable gametophytes on B. moritziana (Sonder ex Kutzing) J. Agardh from Australia but not on B. binderi Harv. from Puerto Rico. The complete life-history of Dawsoniocolax was observed in culture.
