Abstract

The author gives a survey on the theory developed by him on organic growth. He succeeds in proving a relation between metabolism and growth. His hypothesis can be expressed by a simple differential equation. In the group of the metazoa, three different types of metabolism are found which can be distinguished from the point of view of the relation between oxygen consumption and body-weight. Growth formulas may be deduced for the different types of metabolism which are in good accordance with the empirical growth curves. The importance of growth principles for morphogenesis is stressed. It may be concluded that significant phenomena of the ontogenetic and phylogenetic process may be interpreted as manifestations of growth principles and may thus be submitted to a quantitative analysis.
