Abstract

At Rourkela Steel Plant, the life of steel ladle was low mainly due to failure at bottom and slag zone and sometimes in metal zone. For the improvement in life in key brick lining, design was made in place of vertical brick lining. For the improvement in the life of steel ladle bottom, Al2O3-MgO-C bricks (AMC) was developed and for the improvement in metal zone, 75% Al2O3 brick with repetitive PLCR was tried. MgO-C bricks with superior properties were used in slag zone. Around 40% improvement in ladle life was achieved with a combination of design and the use of superior quality refractories in different zones.
