Abstract

This paper reports on the design, testing and commercial operation of apparatus to tap a 120/240V service directly from a 72kV transmission line. The installed apparatus consists of a capacitive voltage divider, a standard 14.4kV distribution transformer and auxiliary equipment for protection, regulation, resonance suppression etc. that together supply a 25kVA commercial load. Details are also given on variations of the basic circuit (use of inherent capacitance of transmission lines and inherent inductance of transformers) as well as on solutions to problems encountered during development (ferroresonance, regulation, flicker).
