Abstract

Despite intensive research over the last few decades, the control of labour in human pregnancy is not clearly understood. Parturition involves both the generation of uterine activity and softening and dilation of the uterine cervix. In this article the endocrine, paracrine and immunological regulators of these mechanisms and the relative importance of these factors in the physiology of parturition will be reviewed.
