Abstract

Abstract Drawing on the results of several sociological research projects, this paper outlines the cultural and economic transformation of the past forty‐five years, including the various processes of modernization in economic and cultural life which have resulted in the homogenization of the quality of life of different social strata. Although homogenization does not mean equalization, the resulting socio‐cultural stratification clearly shows the structure of the economic and political crisis in Hungary. The models of family life and consumption show different types of transmission of culture in the family. These types are diffused in various social layers: 1. Passive and unstable2. Recreational3. Accumulative4. Emancipative The presence and the spread of these types are indicative of the character of social development.
