Abstract

The conventional crystal-field hamiltonian is transformed to coordinates in which the electronic Zeeman interaction is diagonal. The eigenvalues of the transformed hamiltonian are calculated to second order in perturbation. The effect of previously ignored second-order terms and cross-product terms is illustrated by reference to hamiltonian parameter refinements for Mn2+ in tremolite and Gd3+ in lanthanum ethylsulphate.
