Abstract

We report on the first scanning tunnelling spectroscopymeasurements on the edge of aluminium-doped magnesium diboride(Mg1−xAlxB2,x = 0.085) single crystals. Totarget their edge (∼30 µm thick) we have developed a low temperature STM facility featuring a home built compact STMhead coupled to an inertially driven carriage. This allows linear submicronic positioningover millimetric distances. We demonstrate the capabilities of our system by showingreproducible tunnelling spectra obtained both parallel and perpendicular to the crystallinec axis. Tunnelling on the edge reveals the gap originating in the highly 2Dσ band but in contrastwith pure MgB2 does not showthe signature of the π gap.
