Abstract

Unit-cell dimensions of lunar plagioclases, γ in particular, notably differ from those of terrestrial plagioclases with the same An-content inferred from Ca/Ca + Na + K or Ca/8O. It is shown that this crystallographic anomaly is a consequence of the chemical anomalies affecting lunar plagioclases. In particular it is a consequence of the presence of □ [Si₄O₈] in solid solution. This molecule influences the composition of the framework, to which the γ angle is strongly related. On the basis of these results some data on the thermal state of lunar plagioclases are briefly discussed.
