Abstract

New measurements of gravity in the southwest Pacific are used to construct crustal models. The upper mantle beneath the Fiji plateau must be at least 1 to 2% less dense than the mantle underlying the adjacent basins to the west and south. The central Fiji plateau and Coral Sea basin have crusts somewhat thicker than typical oceanic crust. Crustal thicknesses of about 24 km are observed beneath the Lord Howe rise, the Norfolk ridge, Viti Levu, and the Gulf of Papua.
