Abstract

The 'cross cultural psychiatry' movement has developed alongside a growing awareness that ethnicity, cultural background and race are critical factors in determining the way in which mental illness is assessed and managed. Here, Kamaldeep Bhui describes the principles of cross cultural psychiatry and reviews the research evidence which precipitated its growing influence. He identifies lessons for probation services and highlights the gains which psychiatry and other mental health professions could make from a greater appreciation of the Probation role.
