Abstract

MRI procedure rooms have safety challenges related to patient monitoring due to equipment constraints, distance of care providers from patients, and procedure lengths. Often, preprocedure assessment regarding patient care needs is not available to the radiology staff until patient arrival. The purpose of this pilot study was to identify objective criteria to determine critically ill patients' acuity level, staffing, and monitoring requirements for patient transport to and within the MRI department. Results indicated statistically significant ICU and MRI nursing concordance in determining patient acuity and care requirements. Study results have assisted in identifying departmental staffing, schedules, and appropriate support equipment.
