The Basic Design course is a fundamental foundation in design education that introduces students to basic visual principles and creative problem-solving approaches. However, it creates challenges for students transitioning from traditional, rote-based learning environments to more abstract and conceptual thinking. The current study investigated how students comprehend and apply basic design principles through a workshop in the Basic Design I course at the European University of Lefke. The workshop, involving 81 first-year students from four design departments (Architecture, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design – Landscape Architecture – Visual Communication Design) and employed wire art as an applied vehicle for visualising and comprehending theoretical knowledge. The students underwent practical and reflective segments, allowing them to attain in-depth knowledge of design principles like balance, contrast, rhythm, symmetry, proximity, and unity. A guided survey was conducted after the workshop to identify student perceptions of these principles based on demographic factors like age, gender, and academic department. The results showed statistically significant perceptual differences depending on department, with the Visual Communication students especially having a more nuanced consciousness of visual principles. Age also showed significance, especially for the principle of proximity, as a sign of developmental or experiential processes in perception. Moreover, gender differences were found, and male and female students varied in sensitivity to the principles of contrast and symmetry. These findings support the need for integrating physical, three-dimensional workshops within foundation design education. They also highlight the diverse ways students of different backgrounds and disciplines learn about design. Future research must more comprehensively explore how spatial and material experience influences cognitive and creative growth within design learning spaces.

  • Yong Ren + 1 more

Visual communication design and space design is discussed in this paper the complementary relationship between, it is worth mentioning that the visual communication design can be a good blend of collision and space design, so the analysis of the blend mode in the design of visual communication design elements in space, and space visual design elements of law, more reasonable and effective use of visual communication design elements in space design activities for better design services, become a carrier capacity and environmental design in visual communication design concept, therefore, in the design of the two classify, between the two cannot be away from each other, can only promote better design complement each other. As is known to all, the most direct contact between human beings in this world is vision, also known as sight and sight, followed by hearing, smelling and tasting. Therefore, the more intuitive feelings of human beings will be conveyed by vision. In 1960, the term "visual communication" popular in the world design congress held in Japan, including printed newspapers and magazines, posters and other promotional material design, and television, movies, electronic billboards and other media, through the eyes to convey to the brain for modelling of expressive design is widely referred to as visual communication design, there's a phrase can express: show people design, design. Moreover, in the design of contemporary exhibition space, visual communication design elements are often used. These design elements not only have the function of transmitting information, but also have unlimited commercial value and propaganda effect. Left the concept of positioning, space design is only the so-called functional platter; Ignore the visual communication of visual language, no matter how good the environment will be due to graphic design style gap and left a failure. As we know, one of the most important functions of visual communication design elements is to help present the most complete visual effect in the spatial display. The organic connection between visual communication design and display space design not only harmonizes the relationship between two-dimensional plane and three-dimensional space environment, but also expands the cooperation between subjects and strengthens the research space between the two design disciplines. Only in this way can designers solve complex and comprehensive problems and help designers make full use of their advantages to create better works.

Garden landscape not only provides people with places of rest and entertainment, but also protects the natural environment and maintained ecological balance. Although the traditional garden architectural style could retain the classical landscape style, the modern garden facilities and conditions had been greatly improved, and people’s expectations for the construction level of garden landscape continued to improve. Therefore, the effect of traditional landscape design could no longer meet the requirements of social development. This article proposed an interactive genetic algorithm-based landscape space environment optimization design method, in order to provide a certain theoretical reference for landscape design. Firstly, by analyzing the relationship between landscape and buildings, the change in people’s demand for landscape space environment and the relevant characteristics of landscape, this article expounded on the basic principles and methods that landscape design should follow and gave the problems existing in landscape design. Secondly, the interactive genetic algorithm and its innovative design theory were summarized, and the optimization design method of garden landscape space environment based on interactive genetic algorithm was proposed. Finally, the evaluation index system of landscape spatial environment was constructed, and experimental analysis was carried out with a landscape design as a case. The results showed that compared with the traditional landscape design methods, the design scheme proposed in this article could achieve better evaluation results. The optimization design method of landscape space environment proposed in this article could provide some technical support and theoretical reference for landscape architecture and design.

The basic design course is carried out in most institutions providing design education regardless of the area. The goal of this training process is to introduce students to the design elements and principles and to carry out intellectual activities such as observation, perception, impression, experience, research, memory, evaluation, the emergence of creativity and the end with the product. The student is expected to gain competencies such as gaining a different perspective and freedom of expression by communicating with the field and using different materials with new meanings. During the lesson, the students get acquainted with a workplace (studio space) that they are not familiar with. It is aimed that students create original works with different materials and expression techniques, sometimes by doing individual and sometimes group works. It is the first time that the student encounters with the concept of design, observing the social–physical environment from a different perspective, discovering and developing the ability to produce forms. In this study, the experiences of two-dimensional and three-dimensional outcome products shared by the Biruni University Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department’s first-year students in the 'Basic Design I' course, which transfer the basic design elements and principles they learned during the semester to the final applications, are presented.

With the rise of digital media, the visual design of public art has gradually added multimodal interactive experience from purely conforming to information communication. Starting from the multimodal integration of public art visual communication design, this study takes several groups of public art landscape projects in a certain region as research objects to explore the relationship between the multimodal visual design of public art landscape and its public satisfaction. Firstly, the evaluation standard for public art visual communication design is constructed. The sample visual communication design is analyzed using the semantic difference method and then combined with the factor analysis method to provide a comprehensive evaluation. Based on determining the satisfaction effect indexes, the AHP method is used to assign weights to each index. Finally, the satisfaction effect results of the sample visual communication designs are obtained. After utilizing the result equation, the relationship between public art visual communication design and landscape satisfaction effect is explored. The overall appearance of public art visual communication design is presented better, and the impact of multimodal fusion visual communication design is especially prominent in samples 3, 2, and 10. The satisfaction effect of the sample visual communication design is also more satisfactory, with 70% of the sample landscapes scoring above 1.5. Meanwhile, the study verified the positive and significant influence of public art visual communication design on the satisfaction effect of landscapes. The theoretical basis and methodological exploration for the multimodal integration research of public art can be provided by this study.

  • Viktorija Brndevska Stipanović + 4 more

Creating places where urban life is better and of a higher quality is one of the main tasks of the modern society. These places are called ‘great places’ and urban parks have all the predispositions to be one of them. Due to the functions they perform, they are a necessary part of every city. Urban planning and landscape design are very important in the process of creating ‘great places’ for citizens. With their proper use, successful green spaces are created, which are functional and aesthetic at the same time. This is especially important since green areas in the urban environment are becoming less numerous. The subject of analysis in this paper is urban planning and landscape design through the example of Park Macedonia 1 in Skopje, North Macedonia. The park is analysed from different aspects (functionality, safety, plant species selection, layout of the plants and the use of basic principles of landscape design) to determine if this place is a ‘great place’, i.e. whether this place at the same time functional and aesthetic. The results show that Park Macedonia 1 is a ‘great place’; however, there are some gaps in its urban planning and landscape design. These gaps are reflected in the safety of the visitors and the functionality of the park, made in the process of plant species selection and landscape designing of the park, i.e. entrances and exits, layout of plants, incorrect use of focal points, and simplicity, rhythm and line as basic principles of landscape design. Analyses of Park Macedonia 1 in terms of urban planning and landscape design and the proposals for corrections can be used in the future design of ‘great places’ in urban areas like Skopje.

  • Zhiyong Tian

Modern landscape design not only needs creativity but also needs auxiliary tools that can predict the design effect, so as to ensure that the deficiencies can be found through the renderings before the landscape is completed, and targeted rectification can be carried out. At present, the research of landscape planning and design assisted by virtual reality technology in China is basically in its infancy. The rapid development of information-based computer technology, powerful 3D modeling, and solid rendering and animation functions have created a good environment for landscape design, so landscape design is inseparable from the help of computer-aided design technology. However, the conventional method to model and simulate the landscape is rather time-consuming. Based on the research on the application of computer-aided design technology in landscape design, the computer-aided design technology is briefly explained, and the application of computer-aided landscape design is explored step by step.
