Abstract

Abstract The article examines the impact of traffic conditions on truck drivers. To assess driver’s state the galvanic skin response (GSR) method and the electrocardiogram method (ECG), based on heart rate variability assessment, are used. Obtained results show that the degree of danger in a real driving situation can be estimated through changing driver’s functional state as responding reaction on variations of limits characteristics of driver’s state. GSR response occurs instantly when the driver is exposed to the following factors (events): driving in congested traffic; inhibition of the car moving ahead; change of lane of the leading moving car; lane change and the choice of the movement direction by the driver; car parking along the road; density of traffic flow; pedestrian appearance while driving; maneuvering at crossroads, etc. The cardiac rhythm also shows a change from the above-listed factors which is manifested in a heart rate shift from the initial values before starting the trip by the driver. The proposed method can be used to compile safe traffic routing in urban freight transportation conditions including human factors.
