Abstract

Adults molested as children often present for therapy describing difficulties in their relationships. This article examines how the assumptions traditional models make about gender, power, intimacy, and sexuality can inadvertently perpetuate these difficulties. An alternative approach based on narrative ideas will be presented that will help people challenge the sociopolitical conditions that contribute to violence and victimization. A series of exercises are described to help partners escape the effects of abuse, develop healing interpersonal patterns, and create a story about their relationship based on connection.
