Abstract

The enteric nervous system (ENS) regulates numerous gastrointestinal functions, including epithelial barrier permeability and motility. In a recent Nature Medicine study, Workman etal. (2016) propose a method for introducing human pluripotent stem cell-derived enteric neural crest cells into developing human intestinal organoids, thereby restoring ENS cell types and contractile function.
