Abstract

Existing studies have shown the external physical environment factors, such as disorder, darkness, sexual stimulus can influence creativity, and appetite stimulus as an environmental factor can also influence the individual’s cognition and behaviors. We proposed that appetite stimulus could improve creativity, and four experiments were conducted to examine the hypothesis. Experiment 1a and Experiment 1b demonstrated that participants exposed to appetite stimulus generated more creative ideas and showed better performance in the insight problem-solving task. Experiment 2a showed that appetite stimulus could improve individual’s cognitive flexibility. On this basis, Experiment 2b further revealed that cognitive flexibility mediated the influence of appetite stimulus on creativity. These findings indicated that appetite stimulus could improve creativity and cognitive flexibility played the mediating role in the influence of appetite stimulus on creativity.
