Abstract

As often pointed out, in case of a ship equipped with controllable pitch propeller, the occurrence of the unexpected deflection of the ship's head can be observed at the moment when the propeller pitch angle is put to zero. It is reported that such deflection can't be recovered even by the rudder force. In order to confirm this fact, authors carried out the circulating water channel tank tests and measured the forces and moment acting on the hull. The results of the measurements suggested the existence of this fact. The flow visualization methods were applied to investigate the cause of this phenomenon. It became clear that the propeller blades intercepted the water flow, like as a disk, when the propeller pitch angle was put to zero and the rudder was situated in the dead water.
