Specialty section: This article was submitted to Animal Behavior and Welfare, a section of the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science. It has been shown in recent studies that dogs can detect people infected with SARS-CoV-2 [16]. To warrant human and dog health, we analyzed the recent scientific literature and discussed different technical and ethical problems with the involvement of dogs for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in people: the “context-shift effect,” the overlap of VOC profiles in different diseases and odors that may occasionally co-occur, the procedure to collect samples, and the possible role of the animals as vectors in a zoonotic scenario.
