Abstract

AbstractThe cover picture shows, the dogfish shark Squalus Acanthias from which the aminosterol squalamine has been isolated. Squalamine has been characterized as a water‐soluble cationic steroid exhibiting potent antimicrobial activity against fungi, protozoa fungi, protozoa and both Gram‐negative and Gram‐positive bacteria. Details on the different series of spermine and spermidine analogs synthesized as well as comparison of their pharmacological properties are discussed in the Microreview by J. M. Brunel and Y. Letourneux on p. 3897 ff.
