Abstract

Cover Photograph: The complex phase equilibria in the tantalum carbide system allows for the development of varied microstructures with associated interfacial structures between the phases. The top‐left image is a backscattered scanning electron image of a multiphase TaC, ζ‐Ta4C3‐x, and Ta2C microstructure. The top‐right image is an atom probe reconstruction of the zeta phase laths (green) in a TaC matrix (purple). The blue regions in this atom probe reconstruction represent complex Ta‐C ion combinations that were field evaporated. The bottom left image is a focus ion beam‐serial sliced, reconstructed image of a singular TaC grain (blue) with two zeta laths (red) encased within the grain. Finally, the bottom right image is an HRTEM micrograph of an interface between the ζ‐Ta4C3‐x and Ta2C phases highlighting the stacking fault shear that creates each phase from the other.
