Abstract

Flourine compounds NaF, MnF 2, SmF 3, HoF 3 and TmF 3 were bombarded with 11.0 MeV nitrogen ions, and γ-ray intensities measured relative to the strength of 197 keV, γ-rays from F 19. It was assumed that Coulomb excitation was responsible for the γ-rays and that the excitation cross section of the 197 keV level in F 19 could be calculated from the lifetime of the state. Values of B(E2) for excitation of the first excited states in Na 23, Mn 55, Sm 152 and Sm 154 were found to be 0.015 ± 0.003, 0.047 ± 0.003, 3.4 ± 0.2 and 5.1 ± 0.4, respectively, in units of e 2 · 10 −48 cm 4. The results for Ho 165 and Tm 169 were analysed in terms of conversion coefficients using values of B(E2) obtained from inelastic scattering. The total conversion coefficients for the 95 keV level in Ho 165 and the 118 keV level in Tm 169 were found to be 2.9 ± 0.2 and 1.9 ± 0.2, respectively.
