Abstract

Abstract Cosmopolitanism is understood as a philosophical ideal and sociocultural process whereby people feel connection not only to local others who are ethnically or culturally like themselves, but to geographically and culturally distant others. Cosmopolitanism is an attitude which favors understanding points of universal human commonality and a political imperative which prioritizes reflexive dialogue and cooperation across nations. As a set of sociocultural practices and institutional priorities, it also comes with political complications and ethical dilemmas. Social scientifically, questions also exist about the best ways to conceptualize, identify, and measure the concept.
