Abstract

This paper aims to evaluate the effect of SO42− ions on the corrosion protection of steel by Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which was synthesized by traditional co-deposition method. The results show that the presence of SO42− ions greatly affects the uptake amount of Cl- ions. The prepared Mg-Al LDHs has an obvious corrosion inhibition effect on steel. With the increase of SO42− content, the steel corrosion is initially decreased and then increased. The microstructure characterization demonstrates the uptake of Cl- and SO42− on Mg-Al LDHs, which mainly contribute to the corrosion inhibition of LDHs.
