The global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is accelerating as countries seek to achieve sustainable economic growth and mitigate climate change. However, energy transitions involve significant economic risks and returns, necessitating robust financial analysis to inform policy and investment decisions. This study assesses the economic risks and returns associated with energy transitions by employing quantitative financial approaches, including risk assessment models, discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, and scenario analysis. The research incorporates macroeconomic data and industry-specific financial metrics to evaluate the cost-benefit trade-offs of transitioning to renewable energy across different sectors and regions. Key findings reveal that while energy transitions require substantial upfront capital investments in infrastructure and technology, they yield long-term economic returns through cost savings, job creation, and reduced exposure to volatile fossil fuel markets. However, the risks include stranded assets, market disruptions, and financial uncertainty for industries reliant on non-renewable energy sources. The analysis highlights regional disparities in the financial viability of energy transitions, with developed economies showing greater resilience due to stronger policy frameworks and access to capital, whereas developing economies face challenges in financing and infrastructure. By employing scenario analysis, the study examines various pathways for energy transitions under different policy, technological, and market conditions. Results indicate that strategic investments in renewable energy technologies and supportive regulatory environments can significantly mitigate economic risks while maximizing returns. The findings also emphasize the importance of integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into investment decision-making to ensure a sustainable and equitable transition. This research provides actionable insights for policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders to navigate the complexities of energy transitions. By leveraging quantitative financial approaches, the study offers a comprehensive framework for assessing the economic implications of transitioning energy systems, aligning with global efforts to achieve a low-carbon future.

This study explores the intricate relationship between geopolitical risks and the energy transition, focusing on how these risks influence the adoption and development of renewable energy. The research employs a mixed-methods approach that integrates bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review to identify trends, key contributors, and thematic clusters in existing research. The findings indicate a direct relationship between the rise in geopolitical risks—exacerbated by events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war—and shifts in energy transition dynamics. Notably, while geopolitical risks can accelerate investments in renewable energy to enhance energy security, they may also hinder progress due to financial and infrastructural challenges. This duality underscores the complexity of the relationship and highlights the critical role of state governance and international cooperation in navigating these challenges. The study concludes by proposing strategic insights for policymakers and stakeholders to optimize the global energy transition amidst geopolitical uncertainties.

Economic, Environmental, and Social Impacts of Renewable Energies: What have We Learned by Now?

Renewable energy is an essential driver of the energy transition towards a more sustainable world. However, sustainability requires the coordination of the economic, environmental, and social dimensions, turning it into a complex objective. The aim of this study is to review the state of the art of the articles that analyze economic, environmental, and social metrics that can be used to evaluate the impact of renewable. In addition, this work also classifies metrics into two main approaches: macro-studies, corresponding to those that evaluate based on global and aggregated impacts, and micro-studies, corresponding to those that focus on regional and local impacts. A systematic literature review was used to identify and define these main metrics, based on common research databases. Seven metrics were found and described for the environmental impact, four for the economic impact and five for the social impact. The main finding revealed that micro-studies are more prevalent in comparison to macro-studies. Moreover, the systematic literature review allows achieving the objective and highlighting the proposed sustainability assessment framework as crucial for gauging and evaluating impact metrics across the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The difficulty in isolating and measuring each metric may be attributed to the challenges involved in studying the corresponding impact, whether at the micro or macro level. More targeted studies can help in a more efficient energy transition.

Institutional Isomorphism Model and Its Impact on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance Reporting

Objective: The aim of this research is to present an institutional isomorphism model and examine its impact on environmental, social, and corporate governance reporting. Methodology: This study employs a mixed-methods approach, conducted simultaneously. The quantitative part is descriptive-survey and correlational, with data collected from 385 managers of publicly traded companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange through a questionnaire. The data were analyzed using LISREL software. In the second part of the study, a qualitative approach using ethnography and purposive sampling was employed to collect data from individuals holding doctoral degrees in accounting and working in publicly traded companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and content analysis methods. Findings: Based on the findings of the first study, the institutional isomorphism factors (coercive, normative, and mimetic) explain 65.9% of the variance in environmental, social, and corporate governance reporting. Additionally, in the second study, after conducting interviews with 10 participants, a total of 33 categories were identified during the open coding phase, which were considered as the main categories. The category of labor rights had the most repetitions in the interviews, and the categories of performance compensation, labor rights, and corporate social responsibility investment were repeated in all interviews. During the axial coding phase, the 33 main categories were classified into four categories: social dimension, corporate governance, environmental dimension, and finally, institutional isomorphism. The environmental dimension, with 10 main categories and 96 repetitions in the interviews, had the highest number of repetitions, with the categories of corporate social responsibility investment, biodiversity, and environmental issues in products, services, and supply chains being the most important from the interviewees’ perspectives. The social dimension, with 11 main categories and 183 repetitions, had the highest frequency, with the categories of labor rights, social issues related to customers and the supply chain, stakeholder social perceptions, and health, safety, and productivity being the most important. Finally, the corporate governance dimension, with 9 main categories and 105 repetitions, had the most importance in the interviews, with the categories of investment risk management and performance compensation being the most significant. In the selective coding phase, the social dimension, with 11 main categories, was introduced as the central category. Conclusion: This study highlights the critical role of institutional pressures—coercive, normative, and mimetic—in shaping sustainability assurance practices. By addressing legal, cultural, and industry-specific factors, it underscores assurance as a vital tool for legitimacy and stakeholder alignment. The findings advance institutional theory and offer practical insights for policymakers, companies, and stakeholders.

Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition: The Societal Implications of Policy and Legislation on Renewable Energy

The global shift to decarbonization and a sustainable economic development underscores the importance of a just energy transition. In 2019, Indonesia’s energy sector accounted for 34.5 per cent of its total emissions (lulucf included). While transitioning to green energy is paramount, it is laden with interwoven challenges encompassing technological innovation, infrastructure expansion, financing, and harmonizing socio-economic and environmental outcomes. At the heart of a just energy transition is the commitment to counteract potential setbacks, such as unemployment, ecological degradation, and ensuring equitable prospects within the transformative phase. This article delves into Indonesia’s legislative and policy framework regarding energy transition, spotlighting the obstacles and potentialities of implementing current strategies as well as contemplating the formulation of future policies that champion justice in the energy metamorphosis. Our research methodology includes a literature review with extensive interviews with pivotal stakeholders. The goal is to gauge the ramifications of Indonesia’s energy policies in their social, economic, and environmental dimensions. While Indonesia has an impressive potential in renewable energy resources, a distinct challenge remains – the absence of transparency in orchestrating a just energy transition. Forthcoming legislation and strategies should focus on community needs, particularly of marginalized people, ensuring that they benefit from a just energy transition. Incorporating stakeholders in policy deliberations is vital to shape comprehensive, inclusive strategies.

Modeling the Impact of Renewable Energy Adoption on Nigeria’s Power Sector Sustainability

This study evaluates the sustainability implications of renewable energy adoption in Nigeria’s power sector through an integrated scenario-based analysis. Using advanced modeling tools such as the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) and the System Advisor Model (SAM), the research examines three scenarios—Business-as-Usual (BAU), Moderate Adoption, and Aggressive Adoption—spanning 2025 to 2055. The Aggressive Adoption scenario demonstrated the most substantial benefits, achieving a 62% renewable energy share, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65%, and creating 5.4 million jobs. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for solar and wind technologies was projected to decline to $0.04/kWh and $0.05/kWh, respectively, establishing renewables as a financially competitive alternative to fossil fuels. The Moderate Adoption scenario, achieving a 38% renewable energy share, highlighted the potential of incremental progress while underscoring the need for robust policy interventions to achieve transformative impacts. The BAU scenario illustrated the risks of inaction, with 81% reliance on fossil fuels leading to persistently high emissions and limited electrification. Policy recommendations emphasize the necessity of comprehensive frameworks, including renewable portfolio standards, feed-in tariffs, and investments in grid modernization and energy storage systems. Decentralized energy systems, local manufacturing of renewable technologies, and innovative financing mechanisms such as green bonds are also identified as critical enablers. The study situates Nigeria’s energy transition within the context of global climate goals, providing actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. Future research directions include grid integration modeling, localized manufacturing feasibility studies, and socio-economic equity assessments. Navigating the Path to Sustainability: Modeling Romania’s Energy Transition with AI and Econometrics

This paper focuses on Romania and its transition to a sustainable energy model within the framework of global efforts to address climate change and foster economic modernisation. Although Romania has a broad energy mix, which includes hydro, wind, and solar resources with considerable potential for application for renewable energy, there are still challenges, particularly through reliance on fossil fuels and climate vulnerabilities. The research uses Fractional Multinomial Logistic Models (FMNL) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to analyse relationships between energy production, GDP per capita, and input coefficients between different economic sectors. The research investigates the impact of energy sources on economic structures, the predictive accuracy of advanced models, and policy strategies for optimising Romania’s energy transition. The findings reveal a projected shift toward low-carbon, technology-driven industries by 2031, facilitated by renewable energy integration. The results highlight the importance of investments in green infrastructure, energy network modernisation, and support for emerging industries. This research provides actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, emphasising Romania’s potential to lead regional sustainability efforts. The research contributes to broader discussions on energy sustainability and economic resilience in the context of global environmental challenges by emphasising the significance of advanced modelling techniques.

The social and environmental impacts of large industrial projects are increasingly raising concerns from individuals and civil society organizations. Impact assessment studies and risk management plans barely satisfy these external project stakeholders, who put forward the right to have a say on project implementation conditions. While the analysis and optimization of a project’s techno-economic performance remains the responsibility of the project developer, establishing the conditions for the seamless integration of a project in its human and social environment is a matter of concern for all project stakeholders, and thus requires their engagement through a dedicated and eco-systemic management process. However, views diverge on what engagement means. Current practices are often limited to providing information on project features and listening to stakeholder’s concerns, while the final decisions remain the prerogative of the project developer. The paper argues that a shift in the stakeholder engagement paradigm is needed to create favorable conditions for social acceptance, thus gaining the so-called "Social License to Operate" and more broadly, fostering image, reputation, exemplarity and global performance. After a review of the meaning of a "project stakeholder" and "social acceptability", and building on the theories and concepts of social psychology, this paper aims at demonstrating that social acceptance requires fair dialogue with stakeholders and the co-creation of some of the project aspects. The components of an effective stakeholder engagement strategy are discussed, including engagement modes, focus group composition, the role of experts and the use of different communication vehicles. Dedicated collaborative decision-aid software is presented, which supports dialogue and consensus building. Methodologies to assess project performance according to selected social, environmental and economic dimensions are used to materialize and present opinions, which can be further discussed in groups to evolve towards more objective assessments and to document general interest, while guaranteeing transparency, inclusiveness, traceability and even spontaneity. Innovative mathematical engines are used to detect, qualify and quantify "weak signals" stemming from perception biases that stakeholders inevitably have when assessing complex issues. This approach and the results will be illustrated via the example of the El Paso LNG terminal, in the town of Puerto Libertad, Sonora, Mexico.

Identification of topical issues of the energy transition in publications of the scientific content aggregator Scilit. Part 1. Keyword clustering

Background. Access of Russian researchers to Scopus and Web of Science is limited, so the use of open abstract databases becomes relevant. Objective. To reveal the topical issues of energy transition in publications presented in the free access scientific content aggregator Scilit. Materials and methods. The topics of publications were identified by clustering keywords using VOSviewer software. 9,988 bibliometric records of articles from 2019–2023 were used. Results. Current energy transition issues that merit further study are identified, including: the benefits of energy transition for energy systems, the importance of information and communication technologies, exploring the human and social dimensions, key challenges to a just transition, current issues in the hydrogen economy, the benefits of the digital economy and key challenges to the energy transition. Conclusions. Most publications are devoted to the Sustainable Development Goals “Affordable and Clean Energy” and “Climate Action”. Publications by the authors from European institutions and Chinese universities are the most widely presented. The journals that publish the main articles on energy transition presented in Scilit were identified. The proposed approach to identifying the topics of publications revealed the tasks for further, more detailed research.

Stakeholder Insights: A Socio-Agronomic Study on Varietal Innovation Adoption, Preferences, and Sustainability in the Arracacha Crop (Arracacia xanthorrhiza B.)

Arracacha, a root crop indigenous to the Andean region of South America, holds significant agronomic and socio-economic importance in Colombia. The study aims to evaluate the impacts of adopting the ‘Agrosavia La 22’ variety on agricultural sustainability and productivity, encompassing economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Additionally, it analyzes the preferences of farmers and other stakeholders regarding the sustainability of the introduced technological innovations. Conducted over three years (2021–2023), the study offers comprehensive insights into adoption trends and stakeholder perceptions. Utilizing the Ambitec-Agro methodology, the research assesses the environmental, social, and economic impacts of ‘Agrosavia La 22’. Data collection involved field observations and interviews with farmers and key actors in the arracacha supply chain. Results indicate a substantial increase in the cultivated area from 1500 hectares in 2021 to 2650 hectares in 2023, with the proportion of total cultivated area rising from 47.6% to 84.1%. Economically, ‘Agrosavia La 22’ demonstrated significant input cost savings, reducing costs by USD 347 per hectare by 2023 and enhancing producer surplus from USD 30.95 to USD 651.16 per hectare. Yield comparisons show higher median yields for ‘Agrosavia La 22’ (20 t ha−1 in 2023) compared to traditional varieties (12.5 t ha−1). Socially, there was a marked improvement in farmers’ income perceptions, and environmentally, there was a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (324.05 kg CO2-eq ha−1) due to optimized fertilizer and pesticide applications. Eco-efficiency (EE) analysis shows that ‘Agrosavia La 22’ consistently demonstrated positive EE values, indicating economic viability alongside lower GHG emissions. In 2021, its EE stood at 2.2 USD/kg CO2-eq, increasing to 27.75 USD/kg CO2-eq by 2023, reflecting substantial economic gains relative to environmental impact. Conversely, the traditional variety initially exhibited lower EE due to high GHG emissions. Challenges such as soil quality decline and market price volatility were noted. Overall, the findings underscore the economic, social, and environmental benefits of ‘Agrosavia La 22’. Furthermore, the methodology used in this study can be applied to the evaluation of other varietal innovations in developing countries with limited resources for assessing agricultural technology impacts.

BARRIERS TO THE ADOPTION OF CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT AUDITING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The construction industry is a vital driver of economic growth, yet it faces persistent challenges such as cost overruns, delays, and poor-quality deliverables, which hinder sustainable development. Construction Contract Auditing (CCA) has emerged as a critical mechanism to address these issues by ensuring adherence to contractual terms, enhancing transparency, and promoting accountability. Despite its potential, the adoption of CCA in Nigeria, particularly in government-funded projects, remains limited due to various barriers. This study comprehensively examines the inhibitors to CCA adoption in Nigeria, focusing on their implications for sustainable development. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 127 construction professionals in Nigeria's north-central region and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The findings reveal that corruption and lack of political will (NV=1.00) and the absence of comprehensive contract auditing frameworks (NV=0.75) are the most severe barriers. Other significant inhibitors include resistance from project stakeholders and low awareness of CCA benefits. The study underscores the need for institutional strengthening, legislative reforms, and stakeholder education to overcome these barriers. By addressing these challenges, CCA can promote transparency, accountability, and resource efficiency, aligning with broader sustainable development goals. This research contributes to the literature by providing a ranking of barriers based on their severity and linking CCA to sustainable development, offering actionable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders.

Achieving optimal contractor selection: an AI-driven particle swarm optimization method

Contractor selection plays a vital role in project management, where factors such as cost, quality, and time must be carefully considered. This study presents an innovative approach to optimize contractor selection using an AI-driven method based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The objective is to achieve the best possible selection of contractors by considering multiple criteria simultaneously. Real-world data on cost estimates, quality scores, and project times are collected and normalized for fair comparison. The PSO algorithm is utilized to search for the optimal combination of contractors that minimizes cost, maximizes quality, and minimizes project time. The proposed weighted objective function evaluates the performance of each contractor based on the selected criteria. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the AI-driven PSO method in achieving optimal contractor selection. The findings highlight the potential of using AI techniques for decision-making in project management, enabling project stakeholders to make informed and data-driven contractor selection decisions. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on AI applications in project management and provides practical insights for project managers and stakeholders involved in contractor selection processes.
