Abstract

It is shown how, by varying the rhombohedral unit cell angle α, or the hexagonal c- to a-axis ratio in Bi 2Te 3, a critical value, ( c a ) crit., is reached. At that value many regularities appear in the reciprocal lattice of Bi 2Te 3. Four methods of changing the ( itc a ) ratio are discussed. It can be accomplished with excess tellurium, solid solutions with V A 2−VI A 2 compounds and In 2Te 3, anisotropic thermal expansion, and unidirectional strain. ( c a ) crit. = √( 195 4 ), and materials with c a < ( c a ) exhibit p-type behaviour, while materials with c a < ( c a ) crit. exhibit n-type behaviour. No interpretation of this correlation has been attempted.
