Abstract

The correlation between stress and strain based polynomial failure criteria is considered. Specific attention is paid to the clarification of the distinction between the fundamental experimental tests required for these criteria. Detailed examination of correlations between these tests suggests that only one set of uniaxial tests (either deformation or loading tests) may be necessary to determine both stress and strain based polynomial failure criteria, provided the effect of the transverse Poisson's ratio is considered explicitly.
