Abstract

The modification in CO-metal interaction due to adsorption on different bifunctional sites on a Au Pd(111) bimetallic surface was identified by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy imaging. By comparison of surfaces with systematically varied morphology and local composition we could distinguish between CO adsorption on Pd(111) sites, Au island edge sites and mixed PdAu surface sites and this way establish a clear correlation between local structure and local chemical behavior.
