Abstract

XPS and UPS core level spectra for the liquid alloy Au x Ga 1− x have been measured as a function of alloy composition ( 0.15 ⪕ x ⪕ 0.85) at temperatures up to 943 K. Core level binding energy shifts of Au4f and Ga3d levels with respect to the pure components have been determined to range up to 0.90 eV and 0.33, respectively. They are compared with values calculated from binary partial enthalpies of solution within a Born-Haber cycle framework using the equivalent core approximation for the final state. Comparison with the cases of liquid AuSn and AlGe alloys is made.
