Abstract

SEN isolated corchorin1, a crystalline bitter principle of melting point 174° C. and molecular composition C22H36O8 and corchoritin2, having melting point 218–222° C. and molecular formula C12H18O3 from the alcoholic extract of jute seeds (Corchorus capsularis, Linn.). Karrer and Banerjee3 obtained corchortoxin, having melting point 247° C. and molecular composition C23H32O6. Soliman and Saleh4 identified corchorin as strophanthidin.
