Comparing Efficacy of Online and In-Person Versions of a Training on U.S. Federal Wage and Hour, Child Labor Laws, and Hazardous Occupations Orders for Secondary School Professionals

The New Jersey Safe Schools Program (NJSS) offers courses required for secondary school vocational-career-technical education teachers to become school-sponsored structured learning experience supervisors. The "Federal Wage and Hour and Child Labor Laws, Regulations and Hazardous Order Course" (FWH) was originally conducted in-person by U.S. Department of Labor-Wage and Hour Division from 2005 to Summer 2013, and then NJSS began conducting this course in-person (October 2013-April 2015). Staring in March 2015, this course was conducted online; beta-/pilot tests were conducted in Winter 2014-2015. Starting in May 2015, this course was offered exclusively online. This paper analyzes data from the in-person and online versions of the FWH, including overall course evaluation data comparing two versions with similar questions/constructs. The New Jersey Safe Schools Program modifications to FWH included adding information regarding the Fair Labor Standards Act's Section 14(c) and supplemental case studies. The online version included information/resources provided during the in-person training plus assessments to supplement each module; the online version was split into modules to allow participants scheduling flexibility. Participants were given multiple possible attempts to achieve a minimum passing grade of 70%, excluding two ungraded activities (crossword puzzles simply completed). Descriptive statistics evaluated user satisfaction online compared to the in-person version of FWH and performance on aforementioned online assessments replacing in-person discussions/interactions. Between October 2013 and April 2015, 160 participants completed the training in person; 156 had complete data. Between April and November 2015, 78 participants completed the training online; 74 participants had complete data. Other enrolled participants were in progress (not done as of 12/23/2015). Overall satisfaction was similarly high for in-person and online versions of FWH; over 95% of responding participants recommended this course to colleagues. Course evaluations for in-person participants indicated 83% felt the course objectives were completely met, whereas 95% of the responding online cohort felt course objectives were completely met. Further analyses examined performance of online assessments regarding number of attempts and scores achieved and performance on highlighted questions in certain module lessons. Data suggested the online format as a viable alternative to an in-person version of this training and provided NJSS and agency partners with ideas on how modifications/improvements can be made.

REFLECTION OF THE GENRE STRUCTURE OF NEWSPAPER TEXTS ON THE COMPOSITION MODEL OF A NEWSPAPER (BY THE EXAMPLE OF PRINTED AND ONLINE NEWSPAPER <i>THEWASHINGTON POST</i>)

The article analyzes the composition of online and print versions of the Washington Post newspaper in order to discover the correlation between the newspaper genre structure and its composition model. The latter is interpreted as a system of parts and sections and a set of stable connections between them. The analysis has revealed that the print ver- sion has a sophisticated composition and consists of sections, parts and columns which indicate the source of information. The online version has a simpler, well-structured, clear-cut composition made up of parts and sections; the majority of the texts are supplied with a reference to the genre. Differences in the composition can be explained by several reasons. It has been found that the print version of the newspaper is addressed to regular readers who have certain expectations from the sections, while the electronic version has a large percentage of “random” readers, for whom it is important to have a clear idea of what material they deal with. It is emphasized that the observed deviation from the traditional genre structuring of the sections in the print version of the paper is associated with the image-related causes, such as the desire to create a unique memorable product. As a result, one and the same product can have different composition in the print and online versions. The analysis carried out by the author proves that there is a clear link between the composition and the genre system in the online newspaper; texts of the print version have a looser connection with the traditional genre system, which can be at- tributed to marketing reasons.

Reducing off-line to on-line: An example and its applications

We study on-line versions of maximum weighted hereditary subgraph problems for which the instance is revealed in two clusters. We focus on the comparison of these on-line problems with their respective off-line versions. In [3], we have reduced on-line versions to the off-line ones in order to devise competitive analysis for such problems. In this paper, we first devise hardness results pointing out that this previous analysis was tight. Then, we propose a process that allows, for a large class of hereditary problems, to transform an on-line algorithm into an off-line one with improvement of the guarantees. This result can be seen as an inverse version of our previous work. It brings to the fore a hardness gap between on-line and off-line versions of those problems. This result does not apply in the case of maximizing a k -colorable induced subgraph of a given graph. For this problem we point out that, contrary to the first case, the on-line version is almost as well approximated as the offline one. .

Psychometric evaluation of an online and paper accidental bowel leakage questionnaire: The ICIQ-B questionnaire.

To evaluate the psychometric properties of an online versus paper US-English version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Bowel (ICIQ-B). The ICIQ-B includes 17 items under 3 domains: bowel pattern (5 items), bowel control (7 items), and quality of life (5 items). We recruited community-dwelling adults seeking treatment for ≥monthly bowel leakage from specialty clinics within a VA medical center and university affiliate. An online versus paper version was evaluated at baseline, 2 weeks later, and 3 months after nonsurgical treatments per usual care. We assessed test-retest reliability (Pearson correlations) at 2 weeks, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), and convergent validity (Pearson correlations). Sensitivity to change was the difference between the baseline and post-treatment (3-month) scores. Mean age was 58.0 ± 11.9; 36% Veterans, 52% women. At baseline, 2 weeks, and 3 months, we found no differences in the online vs paper scores for the bowel control and quality of life domains. The ICIQ-B demonstrated fair internal consistency for the bowel pattern domain (Cronbach's α = 0.36-0.54). Internal consistency on the bowel pattern domain was better with the paper version than the online version at 2 weeks (P < 0.05) and 3 months (P < 0.01) with no difference at baseline. All other domains had good internal consistency (Cronbach's α > 0.80), good retest reliability (r ≥ 0.70, P < 0.001), domain-specific convergent validity for stool consistency (P < 0.05), incontinence severity (P ≤ 0.002), and quality of life impact (P < 0.05). After nonsurgical treatments, we found a reasonable response to change (P ≤ 0.05). Online and paper versions had robust psychometric data for use among U.S. men and women, including Veterans. News in Online and Print Newspapers: Differences in Reader Consumption and Recall

How readers consume and recall news presented in online and print versions of two newspapersin the Netherlands are investigated in this experimental study. Few differences are found between the online and print versions in terms of news supply. Reader attention to the news stories varies, depending on the newspaper and news category. No consistent reading pattern is evident and the print version readers do not read more than the online version readers. News Consumption seems to be more dependent on the news category, reader gender and interest in a particular topic than on whether the news appears in print or online. Finally, on the basis of cued and free recall questions, no consistent pattern differentiates readers of the print newspapers from the online versions. In conclusion, evidence has not been found that online readers consume and retain news differently from readers of the print versions examined in this study.

Validity and reliability of the online useful field of view test among community-dwelling older adults

Background The Useful Field of View Test (UFOV®) is a widely used measure of processing speed and visual attention that predicts driving performance and other functional abilities among older adults. We examined the reliability and validity of a new UFOV® version adapted for online administration. Method Community-dwelling older adults (N = 69, M = 73 years of age) completed the personal computer (PC) and online versions of the UFOV® at baseline and approximately 4 months later (registered at https://osf.io/7utgw). Participants also completed baseline measures of cognitive, motor, and visual function (i.e. Flanker, Timed Up and Go Test, and near visual acuity). Pearson correlations were used to examine the validity and reliability for the total and subtest scores of the online UFOV® version relative to the PC version. Convergent and divergent validity was examined by comparing correlations between both the UFOV® versions and measures of cognitive, motor, and visual function. Results UFOV® total, divided attention, and selective attention subtest scores of the online and PC versions were significantly correlated with moderate to strong effect sizes, rs = 0.39–0.54, ps < .001, supporting evidence for the validity of the online version. The online and PC versions of UFOV® were similarly related to gait speed, indicating convergent validity. Both versions of the UFOV® were distinct from near visual acuity, indicating divergent validity. The online UFOV® total and selective attention subtest scores from baseline to posttest were significantly correlated, indicating test–retest reliability, rs = 0.64–0.72, ps ≤ .006. Lack of variability among processing speed subtest scores restricted analyses, as performance was highly consistent across time. Discussion These data support the validity and reliability of the online UFOV®, particularly for the total and selective attention subtest scores. Future research should confirm the online UFOV® similarly predicts driving and other aspects of functional performance among older adults.

An Alternative Ranking Problem for Search Engines

This paper examines in detail an alternative ranking problem for search engines, movie recommendation, and other similar ranking systems motivated by the requirement to not just accurately predict pairwise ordering but also preserve the magnitude of the preferences or the difference between ratings. We describe and analyze several cost functions for this learning problem and give stability bounds for their generalization error, extending previously known stability results to nonbipartite ranking and magnitude of preference-preserving algorithms. We present algorithms optimizing these cost functions, and, in one instance, detail both a batch and an on-line version. For this algorithm, we also show how the leave-one-out error can be computed and approximated efficiently, which can be used to determine the optimal values of the trade-off parameter in the cost function. We report the results of experiments comparing these algorithms on several datasets and contrast them with those obtained using an AUC-maximization algorithm. We also compare training times and performance results for the on-line and batch versions, demonstrating that our on-line algorithm scales to relatively large datasets with no significant loss in accuracy.

The reliability of patient-reported outcomes in patients with chronic low back pain when answered in online, telephone, and face-to-face interview format

Purpose: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are unique indicators of disease and treatment impact on patients that help in the selection of the correct interventions for their treatment. The aim of our study was to investigate the reliability of PROs that are frequently used in patients with chronic low back pain in face-to-face interview, online, and telephone formats. Methods: The participants were randomized into groups until there were at least 120 participants each in the face-to-face interview, online, and telephone groups. All participants completed the Oswestry Disability Index, the Roland–Morris Disability Questionnaire, and the Fremantle Back Awareness Questionnaire according to the format characteristics of their group. Results: Among the 364 patients, in the online group (n=120) the completion time for all three questionnaires was significantly shorter than that in the face-to-face interview (n=121) (ODI: p=0.002, RMDQ: p=0.003 and FreBAQ: p=0.032) and telephone (n=123) (ODI: p=0.007, RMDQ: p=0.001 and FreBAQ: p=0.024) groups. When the test–retest reliability was examined, the ODI (ICC: 0.86), RMDQ (ICC: 0.93), and FreBAQ (ICC: 0.81) showed an excellent correlation in the face-to-face interview group. In the telephone group, the ODI, RMDQ, and FreBAQ showed good correlations. In the online group, there was a good correlation in the RMDQ (ICC: 0.74) and FreBAQ (ICC: 0.65), while there was a moderate correlation in the ODI (ICC: 0.59). Conclusion: Although the ODI, RMDQ, and FreBAQ for chronic low back pain patients had lower reliability correlations in both the online and telephone versions compared to the face-to-face interview, mostly they had adequate reliability. Moreover, the online version was a more useful and quicker evaluation method than the telephone version. A within-subjects trial to test the equivalence of online and paper outcome measures: the Roland Morris disability questionnaire.

BackgroundAugmenting validated paper versions of existing outcome measures with an equivalent online version may offer substantial research advantages (cost, rapidity and reliability). However, equivalence of online and paper questionnaires cannot be assumed, nor can acceptability to respondents. The aim was to test whether online and written versions of the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), a standard measure of functional disability in back pain, are equivalent at both group and individual levels to establish whether they can be used interchangeably.MethodsThis is a within-participants equivalence study. 167 participants with back pain fully completed both the paper and online versions of the RMDQ in random order. Participants were recruited from a chiropractic clinic and patient support groups in Southern England. Limits of equivalence were pre-defined as 0.5 RMDQ points, the Bland-Altman range was calculated, and participants' comments were examined using content analysis.ResultsThe mean score difference was 0.03 (SD = 1.43), with the 95% Confidence Interval falling entirely within our limits of equivalence (-0.19 to 0.25). The Bland-Altman range was -2.77 to 2.83 RMDQ points. Participants identified unique advantages and disadvantages associated with each version of the RMDQ.ConclusionsThe group and individual level data suggest that online and paper versions of the RMDQ are equivalent and can be used interchangeably. The Bland-Altman range appears to reflect the known measurement properties of the RMDQ. Furthermore, participants' comments confirmed the potential value to be had from offering them the choice of completing the RMDQ online or on paper.

Content Preference among Online and Hardcopy Newspaper Readers in Imo State

The emergence of newspapers online has created an ambivalence globally. Whereas the general feeling is that the online version of newspapers are a threat to the print’s business model, it is difficult to tell between online version and hardcopy newspapers which one is more economically rewarding as both are readily available and appear to thrive at least in Nigeria. This study is a survey of 392 newspaper readers in Imo State, selected in accordance with the Taro Yamane formula. Findings show that 80% of the respondents read both versions of newspapers, and that content is immaterial as a determinant of preferred version (76%). Rather, availability accounts for the version attended to per time. In addition, certain demographic and psychographic factors influence choice of content as well as media. It is therefore recommended among other things that the newspaper industry strive to provide both online and print versions provided that appropriate emphasis is laid on news which respondents consider the most valuable of newspaper contents.

ISBN 9788763545594 (set), $122.] Music examples, appendices, select bibliography, index. Inger Sørensen's thematic catalog of the works of J. P. E. (Johan Peter Emilius) Hartmann (1805–1900) may be viewed as a pinnacle accomplishment in a career devoted to the life and works of this important Danish composer and musician. While a monumental work in itself, the two-volume catalog is preceded by a major biography and an exhaustive edition of the Hartmann family correspondence. All of this previous research contributes to the depth and accuracy of Sørensen's catalog. Hartmann's life spanned the bulk of the nineteenth century, and his works are viewed as an important representation of Scandinavian romanticism. Although he did have the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and met and was acquainted with the most famous composers of his time, his compositions are characterized as being in a conservative, essentially Danish or "Old Norse" style. While his son-in-law Niels W. Gade achieved a high level of international recognition, Hartmann's reputation remained mostly confined to Denmark throughout his lifetime. Hartmann's lack of international familiarity, however, did not distract from his rich musical output, which spanned more than forty years of active composing and led to the completion of more than five hundred works. His impressive career resulted in three full operas, six ballets (produced in collaboration with his life-long friend August Bournonville), three melodramas, and numerous incidental accompaniments for other stage works. He composed two symphonies and nineteen other significant orchestral works. Other notable contributions were numerous chamber works and a large repertory of vocal music, including songs and choral settings. Sørensen's print catalog was preceded by and produced from data available in the online version of the catalog (http://www.kb.dk/dcm/hartw/index.xq [accessed 4 October 2019]). In her acknowledgements, Sørensen notes the favorable circumstances and support received from the Royal Danish Library, the Danish Centre for Music Editing, Axel Teich Geertinger, and others to facilitate the work of both the online and print versions. The resulting publication fulfills every expectation of the classic model for a composer's works catalog and excels in some features. It recognizes the concept of an original completed work and relegates fragments, arrangements, and doubtful works to four appendices. The main body of the catalog collates the works by the broad genre categories of "stage music," "instrumental music," and "vocal music." Within each category and subcategory, it organizes works chronologically by date of completion or date of first publication, if no date is provided in the autograph. The essential elements associated with each work include identification with HartW numbers, titles (based on the first printed edition and rendered in the original language), instrumentation, incipits, sources, history (including performances), and a bibliography with references to related letters. Sørensen's scholarship shines forth in the details [End Page 619] of each entry. She impeccably renders the source descriptions with remarkable detail and identifies and describes every applicable version or format of the work. The incipits offer the first bars of each work's main sections (movements, scenes, etc.) and include the instrumentation and the section's total number of measures. Not found in most thematic catalog is the work's history, so this feature stands out as an addition worthy of commendation. In addition to the lists of known performances during Hartmann's lifetime, this section also references reviews. Sørensen provides these descriptions and background information in English. Based on its exemplary scholarship, this beautifully produced publication is a worthy addition to the reference collection of any research or conservatory library. If the cost, coupled with potentially limited interest in the works of J. P. E. Hartmann, prohibit acquisition, libraries should point students and other patrons to the online version, which is readily available. David A. Day...
