Abstract

Convection drives horizontal shearing modes with horizontal vorticity. For two-dimensional convection, these modes arise in a secondary bifurcation at a high Rayleigh number. When the convection is fully three dimensional, this shear arises at onset in an imperfect bifurcation with a parameter measuring the three-dimensionality as the imperfection parameter.
