Abstract
The development of the economy in the industrialized countries, together with the integration of markets this entails, has brought about a net growth in insurance services. Insurance companies operating at an international level are devoting particular attention to their planning and control systems. This article, which is the product of a survey dealing with the operations of the largest American and European insurance companies, describes three general modes of approach to the problem.
