Abstract

In article number 2100785, Lukas Maiwald, Alexander Yu. Petrov, and co-workers address the problem of emission suppression in low-contrast structured optical media. Special quasiperiodic structures are proposed that are designed from reciprocal space to block light propagation in all directions. A dipole placed into such a medium excites random but still exponentially decaying fields as shown in the cover image. An unprecedented suppression of nearly 10 dB is shown in structures with refractive index below 1.6.
