Abstract

The BeWo human trophoblastic cell line produces high levels of multiple pregnancy hormones comparable to the early placental trophoblast. This trophoblastic cell synthesizes large quanties of HCG (Human Chorionic Goadotropin) and small quantities of HPL (Human Placental Lactogen). The glycoprotein hormone synthesis was inhibited by incubation of gonadotropin-secreting cells with endogenous precursors of progesterone in the trophoblastic cell. Complete cessation of HCG production occurred after 72 hours of precursor incubation. Electron microscopy performed at the time of cessation of HCG production revealed almost total glycogen depletion.
