Abstract

Mesothelioma is a rare tumour of the serosal membranes, most commonly the pleura. Asbestos is the main cause, and due to the previously high use of asbestos as a building product Australia has one of the highest incidences in the world. Australia was amongst the first to centrally register cases with the diagnosis being confirmed by a central RCPA-pathology panel. Australian pathologists first introduced the concept of mesothelioma in situ in 1992, which was included in the 2022 WHO classification.
