Abstract

Described by Cornell University as ‘hard and surprising evidence’ is a theory based on new data of how the Appalachian Mountains were formed when North America and Africa approached and collided millions of years ago.The evidence is a thin but extensive layer of sedimentary rocks buried under the older crystalline rocks of the southern Appalachian Mountains and Piedmont province that may also help geologists understand the collisions of continents thought to have formed such features as the Alps, the mountains of Norway, and the Himalayas.
