Abstract

This short-form article describes a multimedia unit of study on social turmoil for students at the ACTFL Intermediate Mid and Intermediate High levels. It explains the rationale for the cultural products used based on current scholarship as well as ACTFL and MLA standards and provides explicit instructional guidance so that students with little prior cultural knowledge and developing language skills are able to construct a meaningful understanding of the social and political contexts in which the cultural products were created. While the unit uses materials that focus on events in twentieth century Chile and Argentina, students will also make connections with social turmoil within the United States.
