Abstract
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to conduct a content validity analysis of the Teacher Impression Scale (TIS), which is an observer rating scale designed to assess preschool children’s peer social competence. The TIS was originally developed in the 1980s and used in research in the 1990s–2010s. This was the first step in an instrument development process for revising the TIS for teacher use in their preschool classrooms. Research Findings: Participants were members of five constituency groups consisting, respectively, of child development scientists, leaders in early childhood equity, culture, race, and ethnicity, practitioners, English-speaking family members, and Spanish-speaking family members. Constituency group members completed the Content Validity Index and then participated in focus groups where they discussed individual items and the format of the scale. Practice or Policy: The information was then used to revise the scale for further psychometric testing. Also, participants suggested that there is a need for a scale like the TIS for use in early childhood programs.
