Abstract

In this study, consumption patterns of snacks were studied according to characteristics of family environment. The subjects of the study were 607 adolescents (men 316 women 291) aged 14 ~ 16 years, living Seoul area, Korea. The subjects were surveyed by a self‐administered questionnaire about household income, parents' education, mother's job, and snack consumption. The subjects with mother having a job showed higher consumption of processed‐snack (P < 0.001), lower consumption of home‐made snack (P < 0.001), but higher frequency of consumption in 'Fruit and fruit juice' (P < 0.05) or 'Milk and yogurt' (P < 0.001) compared to the subjects with mother having not a job. The subjects with higher household income showed higher frequency of consumption in 'Fast food' (P < 0.05), but lower frequency of consumption in 'Milk and yogurt' (P < 0.05). The subjects with parents having higher education level showed higher frequency of consumption in 'Fast food' (P < 0.05). These results suggest that characteristics of family environment may be one of the important factors contributing the consumption pattern of snack among Korean adolescents.
