Abstract

This paper describes the semi-commercial consolidation and fabrication of calcium-reduced vanadium metal into wrought forms, currently being ordered to permit property studies and evaluation for specific applications. Ingots up to 6 in. diameter are melted by the consumable electrode vacuum arc process. Hot rolling with commercial facilities requires heating in inert atmosphere. Cold working is carried out successfully provided the surface contamination resulting from the hot working operation is completely removed. Warm extrusion of ingots successfully avoids the hot working step. Machining and welding operations are feasible.
