Abstract
Consecutive patterns are defined in De_nition 1.3.2. Examples of consecutive patterns are 132 and 43251. There are many approaches in the literature to study consecutive patterns ranging from the symbolic method, the spectral approach, the symmetric functions approach, and the cluster method to inclusion-exclusion arguments and homological algebra, and this chapter provides an introduction to the methods.
