Abstract

Increased vehicle safety is a driving force in the development of Connected Vehicle (CV) and Automated Vehicle (AV) technologies. Unlike traditional in-vehicle safety features, CV and AV technologies help avoid catastrophes all together with advanced warnings of impending danger and beyond human reaction times. Although extensive efforts are underway in the creation of CV and AV technologies, it is still unclear what the best methods are for alerting drivers to the new information they generate. For example, how should an AV keep passengers informed of where it is going and what corrective actions (e.g. lane changes) it plans to take, and how do we design these systems to engender passenger trust. This paper presents a multi-phased approach to address these issues through simulation for future evaluation and development of multimodal vehicle displays for ease of use and increased safety .
