Abstract

We propose a congestion control algorithm, referred to as upstream resource management propagation (URMP) algorithm, for label-switched optical burst switching to provide congestion control in a GMPLS control-plane infrastructure. The algorithm controls the transmission control between the congested node and the ingress edge routers. The congested node transmits a control message upstream for the involved ingress edge routers, and sets up the URMP control states at the nodes throughout the path. Using the URMP states, related congestion events may merge into one congestion. On receipt of the control message, ingress edge routers are synchronized, and they switch from asynchronous transmission to slot-based transmission with a controlled data rate. We also propose a label switched path (LSP) differentiation mechanism to differentiate which LSPs are involved in the congestion control algorithm.
