Abstract

Every project, no matter how small or big, encounters conflicts during their life cycle. In most cases conflicts cannot be avoided, but it can be managed if timely identified. It is very important to continuously monitor the signals which point to their existence. If actions are not taken swiftly, the situation may lead to deeper conflicts and might jeopardize a lot of the project activities, which is not what any project manager, organization or stakeholder wants. This article studied the management of conflict in projects. It also identifies, discusses and analyses the causes as well as the various ways in which conflicts manifest during projects. The effects of conflicts on projects are equally examined. Quantitative and qualitative data were generated from different software, mechanical design and construction (building, structural, water and roads) projects. The article concludes that the issue of conflict management in projects has reached a point where the effective use of relevant strategies can no longer be ignored. In conclusion, the article suggests direction for future research and makes recommendations for strategic conflict management in projects.
