Abstract

The 1961 Autumn Conference of The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society's X-ray Analysis Group had as its subject the study of imperfections in crystals. Professor Seeger gave an introductory survey of the subject, placing his main emphasis on the study of imperfections by x-ray diffraction methods. There followed a group of contributions on the detailed interpretation of electron micrographs and x-ray topographs of crystal imperfections, and the derivation of the strain produced in the lattice by these imperfections. Many speakers described the application of these and other methods to specific problems such as vacancy formation due to irradiation and other processes. During the final session, imperfections in ionic crystals were discussed, with particular reference to charges on dislocations. One isolated, but interesting, paper described the study of domain structures in felspars.
